The Battle of Pratapgad was a significant military engagement fought in 1659 between the forces of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, and the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. The battle took place at the Pratapgad Fort, located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra.

Shivaji Maharaj had been expanding his kingdom and had taken control of several forts in the region. The Adil Shahi dynasty, which was based in Bijapur, saw Shivaji as a threat to their power and launched a military campaign against him.

The Adil Shahi forces were led by Afzal Khan, a powerful general with a large army of soldiers, elephants, and cavalry. Shivaji, on the other hand, had a much smaller force, consisting of only around 3,000 soldiers. However, Shivaji was a skilled military strategist and used guerrilla tactics to gain the upper hand in the battle.

According to legend, Afzal Khan challenged Shivaji to a one-on-one combat, hoping to kill him and end the battle quickly. Shivaji accepted the challenge, but instead of fighting Afzal Khan head-on, he killed him with a concealed weapon, which he had hidden in his sleeve. Shivaji's move caught the Adil Shahi forces off guard and they were thrown into confusion.

Shivaji then launched a surprise attack on the Adil Shahi forces using his small but highly mobile force of soldiers, who were adept at guerrilla warfare. The Maratha forces were able to outmaneuver and outflank the larger Adil Shahi army, and in the ensuing battle, they emerged victorious.

The Battle of Pratapgad was a turning point in the history of the Maratha Empire. It demonstrated Shivaji's military prowess and his ability to outwit and defeat a much larger army. The battle also cemented Shivaji's reputation as a skilled strategist and leader and helped him to consolidate his power and expand his kingdom.
